Do Testosterone Boosters Work? What the Evidence Shows
Do testosterone boosters work? For most products, we found no evidence that they do. A review of 50 such supplements found 61.5% had no published data on their ingredients, and only 24.8% had data showing a testosterone rise. Doses in studies are usually larger than label amounts. Low testosterone needs a blood test, not a guess.

The term
What are testosterone boosters?
Testosterone boosters are dietary supplements sold with the promise of raising testosterone. “Testosterone booster” is a marketing label, not a medical category or a drug class.
A 2020 review looked at 50 such products found through a web search. It counted 109 different ingredients, about 8 per product. Nine in ten made a testosterone claim and half made a libido claim (Clemesha 2020, 'Testosterone boosting' supplements review).
Prescription testosterone treatment is a different thing. A doctor prescribes it after finding a cause for low levels (Mayo Clinic, Male hypogonadism (low testosterone)). A supplement is not a medicine, and the FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold (FDA, Q&A on Dietary Supplements).
The evidence
Do testosterone boosters actually work?
Mostly, no one has shown that they do. In that 2020 review, 24.8% of products had published data showing a testosterone rise for their ingredients, 10.1% had data showing a fall and 18.3% showed no change.
The largest group, 61.5%, had no data at all (Clemesha 2020, 'Testosterone boosting' supplements review). The review also found 13 products above the FDA upper limit for zinc, niacin or magnesium.
Single ingredients tell a mixed story. The sources we read say this, with their doses:
| Ingredient | What the source found | Amount studied |
|---|---|---|
| Tongkat ali | A 2022 analysis of five trials found higher total testosterone with certain extracts (Eurycoma and testosterone (meta-analysis, 2022)). LiverTox notes that free testosterone did not rise in the trial it reviewed (LiverTox, Tongkat Ali). | 200 mg a day in one open study of 76 men (Tambi 2012, Tongkat Ali 200 mg and late-onset hypogonadism) |
| Maca | Better self-rated desire at week 8 in one trial, with no testosterone change (Gonzales 2002, Maca, desire and testosterone) | 1,500 and 3,000 mg a day for 12 weeks |
| Zinc | The NIH fact sheet makes no testosterone statement (NIH ODS, Zinc) | Adult male RDA 11 mg a day |
| Horny goat weed, damiana | No human testosterone trial in the sources we read | No studied amount to compare |
These are findings on single ingredients, in specific groups. They do not describe any gummy.
Results
What testosterone booster results can you expect?
Expect a lab number to move in a study, not a guaranteed change in how you feel. Trials measure blood levels. Whether a small shift changes energy or drive is a separate question.
The 2022 analysis reported a standardized difference, not a figure in ng/dL, and dose and extract varied between trials (Eurycoma and testosterone (meta-analysis, 2022)). The 200 mg tongkat ali study had no placebo group, so it cannot separate the extract from chance or from time (Tambi 2012, Tongkat Ali 200 mg and late-onset hypogonadism).
A study dose is not a promise for your bottle. Compare the label with the research on the label vs studies page.
Is it a good idea
Are testosterone boosters good for you?
It depends on why you want one. If tiredness, low drive or erection trouble has a medical cause, a supplement can delay the visit that finds it.
Low testosterone is one cause among many. Diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, some medicines and stress can also lower energy or drive (NIDDK, Causes of ED (incl. medicines, mood)). A blood test is the way to check, and it is usually drawn in the morning, when levels are highest (MedlinePlus, Testosterone levels test).
Ask a doctor first
Persistent symptoms deserve a test before a purchase. The cause may be treatable.
Check your medicines
Levodopa or an MAO inhibitor, nitrates, blood pressure or diabetes medicine, blood thinners and hormone treatment all call for a pharmacist's advice.
Look at habits
Sleep, activity, alcohol and tobacco affect how men feel and are worth tracking.

How do you check a testosterone booster label?
Read the Supplement Facts before the front. The front sells; the facts panel shows what is in the product.
- Look for printed amounts on every line. A “proprietary blend” hides the split.
- Compare each amount with the dose used in studies, as in the table above.
- Find the distributor and a phone number. See who makes HoneyBoost for an example.
- Be wary of promises of fast or dramatic change. The FTC says health claims need solid human evidence (FTC, Health Products Guidance).
The FDA has found hidden drugs in other enhancement products, so a label cannot guarantee what is inside (FDA, Sexual enhancement product notifications). Read the hidden drugs guide.
Applying it
Where does the HoneyBoost label fit?
The HoneyBoost label makes no testosterone claim in words. It sells a “Male Vitality Formula” with seven printed lines, and the plant lines are small.
Tongkat ali is the line with the most research, at 25 mg of extract per gummy against 200 mg a day in the study above, at least 8 times less. Maca is 100 mg of root equivalent against 1,500 to 3,000 mg. We found no source showing a testosterone rise in men from zinc, maca, horny goat weed, damiana, mucuna or L-arginine at these amounts.
See the full table on the dose gap page. Check your medicines with a pharmacist first, because mucuna carries L-DOPA (MedlinePlus, Levodopa and carbidopa). For chest pain, call 911 (CDC, Heart attack signs). An erection lasting over 4 hours needs emergency care (Mayo Clinic, Priapism).
FAQ
HoneyBoost questions people ask
Do testosterone boosters really work?
For most products we found no evidence they do. In a 2020 review of 50 products, 61.5% had no published data on their ingredients. Some single ingredients raised a lab value in studies, at doses larger than most labels.
What is the best natural way to check testosterone?
A morning blood test ordered by a doctor. Levels are usually highest between 7 and 10 a.m. A supplement cannot tell you your level, and symptoms alone cannot confirm low testosterone.
Can a testosterone booster replace medicine?
No. A supplement is not a medicine. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding one, especially with levodopa, nitrates, or blood pressure, diabetes or hormone treatment.
How long do testosterone booster results take?
No source gives one answer. Studies we read ran from one month to 12 weeks and measured lab values or self-rated desire, not guaranteed changes. Results differ by product, dose and person.
Are testosterone boosters safe?
It depends on the ingredient, the dose and your health. The 2020 review found 13 products above FDA upper limits for zinc, niacin or magnesium. Tongkat ali has a rare liver injury note on LiverTox.
Who should not take a testosterone supplement?
Anyone under 18, pregnant or lactating, and anyone on other medications or with a medical condition, per the HoneyBoost label. Ask a doctor about hormone-sensitive conditions. Persistent symptoms need a visit.
Does tongkat ali lift testosterone levels?
A 2022 analysis of five trials found higher total testosterone with certain extracts, at other doses. LiverTox says free testosterone did not rise in the trial it reviewed. Results do not carry over to every product.
