Ingredient profile

Tongkat Ali for Men: What 25 mg of Extract in HoneyBoost Means

Quick answer

Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a Southeast Asian root, and HoneyBoost lists 25 mg of a 100:1 root extract in each gummy. That is the largest plant line on the label, yet it sits 8 times below the 200 mg a day used in one small trial. The 2,500 mg root equivalent is the plant used to make the extract, not what you swallow.

The basics

What is tongkat ali, and how much is in HoneyBoost?

Tongkat ali is the root of a Southeast Asian tree, Eurycoma longifolia. HoneyBoost prints it as “Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) Root Extract 100:1, 25 mg (equivalent to 2,500 mg Tongkat Ali Root)”.

The ratio 100:1 means about 100 parts of root went into 1 part of extract. So 25 mg of extract stands for 2,500 mg of root. The gummy holds only the 25 mg. Reading the 2,500 as an amount in the gummy is the most common mistake, and the extract ratios page shows the math for every line.

Tongkat ali is also sold as “longjack” and “Malaysian ginseng”. LiverTox notes it has been used in Southeast Asia for conditions such as diabetes, malaria and erection trouble, and sold in the US for testosterone and athletic performance (LiverTox, Tongkat Ali).

Main cautionLiverTox rates tongkat ali a possible rare cause of liver injury (one 2024 case report with a confounder) and says product strength and purity are not standardized. Usual-dose effects are mild: nausea, stomach discomfort, headache, rash.

What studies found

Does tongkat ali change testosterone in men?

In some trials, certain tongkat ali extracts were linked to higher total testosterone. A 2022 meta-analysis of five trials found a significant rise in healthy and low-testosterone men, and its authors asked for more research (Eurycoma and testosterone (meta-analysis, 2022)).

LiverTox adds a limit: clinical studies show mild increases in total testosterone, not free testosterone, and an athletic benefit is not established (LiverTox, Tongkat Ali). Dose and extract type varied from trial to trial.

No source we found tested HoneyBoost, so none can say what this gummy does to testosterone. The label does not claim it in words. A low reading is also a medical finding with its own causes that a doctor can test.

200 mg a day, one month

An open study of 76 men with late-onset low testosterone used 200 mg of a standardized water-soluble extract and had no placebo group (Tambi 2012, Tongkat Ali 200 mg and late-onset hypogonadism).

Stress and mood

In 63 stressed adults, a hot-water root extract for 4 weeks changed salivary cortisol and testosterone. The abstract gives no daily dose (Talbott 2013, Tongkat Ali, stress hormones).

What is missing

No trial of the 25 mg extract in the gummy, and none of tongkat ali next to the other six label lines.

Label vs study

Is 25 mg of tongkat ali extract enough?

Compared with studies, it is small. The label's 25 mg is 8 times below the 200 mg a day used in the one-month trial.

LiverTox gives a traditional range of 100 to 400 mg a day. Against that range the gummy is 4 to 16 times below (LiverTox, Tongkat Ali). One gummy a day would not reach it, and we have no source for stacking gummies to get there. The label's serving is 1 gummy.

Safety

What are the side effects and cautions of tongkat ali?

At usual doses, side effects are described as uncommon and mild: nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, headache and rash (LiverTox, Tongkat Ali). LiverTox also rates tongkat ali a possible rare cause of liver injury.

That rating rests on a single 2024 case report in a bodybuilder, and the report had a confounder. LiverTox also says long-term human safety is not well documented, and that product purity and strength are not standardized. Stop and call a clinician if you notice yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or a new stomach ache after starting any supplement.

  • The label says not to take HoneyBoost if you are pregnant, lactating, have a medical condition or take other medications.
  • Ask a doctor first if you have liver trouble or take hormone treatment.
  • Keep taking prescribed medicine. Never change it because of a supplement.
Erection trouble needs a doctor

It can signal heart disease or diabetes, and these causes are often treatable (NIDDK, Causes of ED (incl. medicines, mood)). Chest pain or other heart attack signs: call 911 (CDC, Heart attack signs). An erection lasting over 4 hours is an emergency (Mayo Clinic, Priapism).

In the formula

How does tongkat ali fit with the other HoneyBoost ingredients?

It is the largest of the six plant and amino lines, at 25 mg next to five lines of 10 mg. Together those six add up to 75 mg, about 1.8% of the 4.2 g gummy.

About 71% of the gummy is sugar by weight. So the tongkat ali is a small share of a sweet chew. Every amount is printed, which is a fair strength: you can check the numbers instead of guessing at a blend.

FAQ

HoneyBoost questions people ask

What does tongkat ali do for men?

Studies of certain tongkat ali extracts found higher total testosterone, but the doses and extracts differed from this gummy. LiverTox says free testosterone did not rise in the trial it reviewed. No study tested HoneyBoost.

How much tongkat ali is in HoneyBoost?

Each gummy lists 25 mg of a 100:1 root extract. The label's “equivalent to 2,500 mg” is the root used to make the extract, not the amount in the gummy.

What is the usual tongkat ali dose?

LiverTox gives a traditional range of 100 to 400 mg a day, and one trial used 200 mg of a standardized extract. The label's 25 mg is 4 to 16 times below that range.

Is tongkat ali safe for the liver?

LiverTox rates it a possible rare cause of liver injury, based on one 2024 case report with a confounder. Usual-dose effects are mild. Ask a doctor first if you have liver trouble.

Is Eurycoma longifolia the same as tongkat ali?

Yes. Eurycoma longifolia is the Latin name of the tree, and tongkat ali is its common name. The label prints both, with the part used: root extract.

Can tongkat ali replace testosterone treatment?

No. A supplement is not a medicine and no source here shows it replaces treatment. Low testosterone is a medical finding that a doctor confirms with a blood test (MedlinePlus, Testosterone levels test).

Does tongkat ali interact with medicines?

LiverTox lists no firm interactions, but its safety data are limited. The HoneyBoost label says not to use it with other medications, so show the bottle to your pharmacist first.
