Supplements and Medicines: Which Combinations Need a Pharmacist First
Supplements and medicines can interact, and the label lines in HoneyBoost that matter most are mucuna (9.8 mg L-DOPA), zinc (2.5 mg) and L-arginine (10 mg). Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take levodopa, an MAO inhibitor, nitrates, an erection medicine, blood pressure or diabetes medicine, a blood thinner or certain antibiotics.

The basics
Can supplements interact with medicines?
Yes. NCCIH warns that dietary supplements may interact with your medications, and that what is on the label may not be what is in the product (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).
The HoneyBoost label is blunt about it: “Do not take if pregnant, lactating, suffering from a medical condition or taking other medications. Consult a physician before using this product.” That is the safest reading for anyone on a daily prescription.
Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Never stop it because of a supplement. The table maps each label line to the medicines worth flagging. It describes the ingredient in general, not a test of the gummy, and the label amounts are small.
| Label line (per gummy) | Ask first if you take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mucuna seed extract, 10 mg (9.8 mg L-DOPA) | Levodopa, an MAO inhibitor | L-DOPA is the active part of levodopa |
| L-arginine, 10 mg | Nitrates, erection pills, blood pressure, diabetes drugs, blood thinners | Mayo lists each as an interaction |
| Zinc, 2.5 mg | Quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics, penicillamine | Zinc can lower their absorption |
| Horny goat weed extract, 10 mg | Heart medicine, aromatase inhibitors | MSK flags heart rhythm and drug effects |
| Damiana leaf extract, 10 mg | Diabetes medicine | Animal data on blood sugar |
| Maca root extract, 10 mg | Hormone treatment, testosterone lab tests | MSK notes hormone and lab effects |
Parkinson medicine
Can you take levodopa with supplements that contain mucuna?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Mucuna seeds contain L-dopa, which is the active component of levodopa therapy (Mucuna pruriens in Parkinson disease (review, 2025)). HoneyBoost lists mucuna seed extract at 10 mg, standardized to 98% L-DOPA, which is 9.8 mg.
That amount is small beside the seed powder used in studies. Even so, a doctor needs the full picture of your L-DOPA sources. MedlinePlus tells people on levodopa and carbidopa to report MAO inhibitors, such as phenelzine, selegiline and tranylcypromine, and to keep a written list of every medicine, vitamin and supplement (MedlinePlus, Levodopa and carbidopa).
The label gives no dosing for people on Parkinson medicine. If you take levodopa, do not add a mucuna product without that talk. Read more on the mucuna page.
Heart and erection medicine
Is it safe to take nitrates or erection pills with L-arginine?
Not without a doctor's say-so. Mayo Clinic says L-arginine can drop blood pressure too low with nitrates, blood pressure drugs and sildenafil (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).
Prescription erection medicines can also harm people who use nitrates for chest pain, have heart disease or heart failure, or have very low blood pressure (Mayo Clinic, ED diagnosis and treatment). Doctors treat nitrates plus those medicines as a contraindication (StatPearls, PDE5 inhibitors (nitrates contraindicated)).
HoneyBoost holds 10 mg of L-arginine, far below the 1,500 to 5,000 mg used in trials (Rhim 2019, Arginine for ED (meta-analysis)). A small amount does not remove the label's own warning. Mayo also does not recommend L-arginine after a recent heart attack (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).
Chest pain, shortness of breath or pain spreading to the arm or jaw: call 911 (CDC, Heart attack signs).
Antibiotics
Does zinc interfere with antibiotics?
It can. The NIH fact sheet says zinc can lower the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics, and of penicillamine (NIH ODS, Zinc).
The advice is about timing: take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, the zinc. One HoneyBoost gummy lists 2.5 mg of zinc as zinc gluconate, which is 23% of the 11 mg Daily Value. The source gives no amount below which timing stops mattering, so ask your pharmacist about your own antibiotic.
Thiazide diuretics go the other way: they raise how much zinc you lose in urine (NIH ODS, Zinc).
- Antibiotic first
Take it at least 2 hours before zinc.
- Zinc first
Wait 4 to 6 hours before the antibiotic.
- Not sure
Ask the pharmacist who filled it.

Which other medicines should you flag?
Blood pressure and diabetes medicine, blood thinners, hormone treatment and heart medicine all belong on your list. Each plant line has its own cautions.
MSK says horny goat weed may cause rapid irregular heartbeat and may affect aromatase inhibitors (MSK, Epimedium (horny goat weed)). Maca may interfere with testosterone blood tests and may affect hormone-sensitive conditions (MSK, Maca). LiverTox rates tongkat ali a possible rare cause of liver injury (LiverTox, Tongkat Ali).
Blood pressure and diabetes
L-arginine can lower blood pressure and blood sugar, and animal data suggest damiana may lower blood sugar. Tell the doctor who manages either condition.
Blood thinners
Mayo Clinic lists anticoagulants and antiplatelets among L-arginine interactions, because of bleeding risk (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).
Hormone treatment
Maca and horny goat weed carry hormone-related cautions. Anyone on hormone treatment or with a hormone-sensitive condition should ask first.
Tell your surgeon about every supplement well before surgery (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).
Before you buy

FAQ
HoneyBoost questions people ask
Can I take HoneyBoost with blood pressure medicine?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. The label says not to take it with other medications. Mayo Clinic notes that L-arginine can lower blood pressure too much with blood pressure drugs, and MSK flags horny goat weed for heart rhythm. Never stop your prescription because of a supplement.
Can a supplement change my testosterone blood test?
It may. MSK says maca may interfere with testosterone immunoassays, the lab method many tests use. If you take any maca product, tell the doctor who orders the test, so the result is read correctly. No source here shows the gummy changes testosterone.
Is it okay to take zinc with antibiotics?
Only with timing. The NIH says zinc can lower absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics. Take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before zinc, or 4 to 6 hours after. Confirm with your pharmacist for the specific antibiotic you were given.
Do supplements and erection pills mix?
Not safely without a doctor. Mayo Clinic says herbal erection products may hold unlisted ingredients and cause dangerously low blood pressure with prescription medicines. Always get a health professional's approval before combining an erection medicine with an herbal product.
Should I tell my surgeon about supplements?
Yes, well before surgery. NCCIH says some supplements can affect bleeding or anesthesia. Give your surgeon the full list, including any HoneyBoost bottle, and follow their instructions on when to stop.
Why does the label say not to take it with other medications?
The label cannot know your prescriptions, so it warns everyone: do not take it if you are pregnant, lactating, have a medical condition or take other medications, and consult a physician first. It is a standard caution, not a finding of harm.
Does the label list directions for people on medicine?
No. The supplied label prints a serving size of 1 gummy (4.2 g) but no directions block, and nothing specific for medicine users. That is one more reason to show your pharmacist the bottle before you take any.
